How to Calculate a Tip

The formula is simple: Bill × Tip % = Tip Amount. Then add the tip to the bill for your total.

Quick mental math tricks

  • 20% tip: Move the decimal left one place (10%), then double it. On $65: $6.50 × 2 = $13.
  • 15% tip: Find 10% then add half. On $80: $8 + $4 = $12.
  • 18% tip: Find 20% then subtract 2%. On $50: $10 − $1 = $9.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

15% is the standard minimum for acceptable service, 18–20% is the norm for good service, and 25% or more is for exceptional service. In fine dining, 20% is considered the baseline.

Do I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Most etiquette guides say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, but either is fine. Tipping on the post-tax total is also common — the difference is usually a dollar or two and always appreciated.

How do I split a tip between friends?

Use the "Split Between" section above. Set your bill, choose a tip %, then hit + to add each person. The calculator divides the total equally and shows exactly what each person owes.

How much do you tip for food delivery?

15–20% of the order total is standard, with a $3–5 minimum for small orders. For difficult deliveries (bad weather, stairs, long distance), tip more.

What does the Round Up button do?

It rounds each person's share up to the nearest whole dollar. This makes it easy to pay in cash and gives the server a slightly larger tip.
